Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a natural process for women at a reproductive age you have certainly heard of or experienced. It is different for every woman, some do not usually feel more than slight discomfort, while some might experience several of its symptoms such as bloating, cramps, breast pain, mood swings, and so much more (not fun). Your hormones play a significant role in keeping your digestion working properly, and when they are disrupted your digestion and excretory functions might be too. Many women report constipation (lack of bowel movement, aka not pooping) during the days leading to their menses. This is completely normal and temporary. Do not be surprised if constipation is accompanied by other symptoms such as gas and even bouts of diarrhea  

Do not worry

It is completely normal to experience constipation when you are about to have your period, but it can certainly add to the overall discomfort that PMS brings. You are not at the mercy of constipation. Here are few recommendations you can follow to hopefully keep your period-related constipation in line.

A–Hydrate well

and avoid excess caffeine and alcohol before your period. They can act as diuretics which reduce the amount of water in your body, drying your stool, and promoting constipation 

B–Eat your fruits and veggies

The natural fiber in fruits and vegetables can promote better bowel movement (just what you need). Remember to avoid foods that usually make you gassy such as broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage, that could add to your discomfort.  

C–Move it along

Even light exercise such as walking, or yoga can encourage bowel movement. It does not have to be strenuous exercise, if you are moving, your poop will too.

D–Let it go…let it go!

Holding your bowel movement when you are already feeling the need to go can only make constipation worse. If you must go, GO! When you feel the urge and wait too long, your stool gets harder because fluids are reabsorbed. This creates a vicious cycle making it even harder to pass.Consider supplements 
Ask your doctor about temporary medication or supplements that could act as mild laxatives. This is not a permanent solution and should not be taken daily. A consistent change in lifestyle and keeping your hormones balanced is the most effective way to keep premenstrual constipation at bay.
